The batoola mask is a metallic-looking face mask which appears like it is made from metal, but is actually polished leather, traditionally worn by Muslim Arab women in the Persian Gulf region. The exact origins of the mask are unknown, but it is believed to have originated in Oman in the 18th century. The mask was originally worn as protection from the harsh desert climate, also working as a shield much like sunglasses do today, but it also came to be seen as a symbol of modesty and status. In the early 20th century, the batoola mask became less common.
