In a memorable moment that brought together art, science, and Saudi pride, international artist and illustrator The Shamal Artist, Genevieve Staats had the honor of presenting two original artworks to Rayyanah Barnawi—Saudi Arabia’s first female astronaut.
The first gift was a hand-illustrated portrait of Barnawi, which was a part of the Hijab Pop Art Collection, which was created with the intention of celebrating Barnawi's groundbreaking space mission and her role in inspiring a new generation of explorers and changemakers. The second was a custom-designed, limited-edition VIP porcelain plate, originally commissioned by KAUST as a luxury corporate VVIP gift. The design seamlessly blends elegance with symbolism—representing innovation, exploration, and Saudi cultural heritage.
“It was a privilege to contribute to this historic moment through my artwork,” said Genevieve. “Rayyanah’s journey is more than a milestone for the Kingdom; it’s a beacon of possibility for women and people everywhere.”
Whist memory can fade, artwork is a daily visul reminder of what is important. This tribute is more than a reflection of Rayyanah’s achievement—it’s a lasting reminder of possibility. The piece is part of The Shamal's Hijab Pop Art Collection, which was recognized as the first augmented reality art collection in Saudi Arabia. It has remained on display in pride of place at the Al Khozama Hotel for over two years, continuing to honour her story in a space where art, culture, and history meet.
